Engineered for extreme performance from -270℃ to 0℃ with exceptional resistance to corrosion.
A comprehensive analysis of metallurgical integrity, local demands, and international engineering standards.
In high-precision engineering, selecting the correct material class for structural and piping components operating below freezing is critical. At standard temperatures, structural carbon steels exhibit high ductility and toughness. However, as temperatures slide below 0°C toward cryogenic extremes like -162°C (the storage temperature for Liquefied Natural Gas) or down to -270°C (liquid helium environments), these materials undergo a fundamental phase shift. This is known as the Ductile-to-Brittle Transition Temperature (DBTT) threshold. Standard carbon steel fasteners quickly lose their toughness, rendering them susceptible to sudden brittle cleavage failure under normal shear stresses.
To counter this, specialty low-temperature fasteners are alloyed with nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. These elements stabilize the face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice structure of the steel. Beiersdorf Industrial Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. designs and manufactures low-temperature fasteners utilizing premium raw materials under strict standards such as ASTM A320 (grades L7, L7M, L43, B8, and B8M). These fasteners are systematically subjected to Charpy V-Notch impact test protocols to ensure they exceed minimum lateral expansion and energy absorption thresholds at sub-zero temperatures.
ASTM A320 Grade L7 fasteners require rigorous Charpy impact testing at -101°C, demonstrating a minimum impact energy absorption of 20 ft-lbs (27 Joules) to guarantee that micro-fissures do not propagate into catastrophic structural failures during high-stress operations in petrochemical and marine terminals.
Thailand has evolved into one of Southeast Asia's most sophisticated industrial hubs, driven by the government's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development initiative. Centered across the Rayong, Chonburi, and Chachoengsao provinces, this master plan has accelerated the growth of petrochemical, automotive, electronics, and power generation clusters.
Particularly, the Map Ta Phut Industrial Port in Rayong has become a vital gateway for LNG imports and processing. LNG terminals, such as the Nong Fab LNG Receiving Terminal and Map Ta Phut LNG Terminal 1 & 2, require extensive networks of cryogenic piping, heat exchangers, valves, and storage tanks. These infrastructure components must operate continuously at -162°C. Fasteners used in these installations are subjected to extreme thermal cycles. In such environments, typical corrosion combined with freezing conditions causes frost-jacking and galvanic reactions. This increases the demand for certified ASTM A320 B8 (Class 2) and B8M stainless steel bolts that can withstand both the sub-zero process temperature and the highly humid, saline coastal atmosphere of the Gulf of Thailand.

Industrial developments in Thailand operate under strict regulatory frameworks. For pressure vessel installations, boilers, and cryogenic piping systems, design projects must comply with regulations issued by the Department of Energy Business (DOEB) and the Ministry of Industry. These standards refer directly to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) codes, specifically ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section VIII, and ASME B31.3 for process piping.
In these codes, fasteners are critical pressure-containing parts. This means substitution with uncertified, generic structural bolts is prohibited. Beiersdorf bridges this regulatory requirement by providing comprehensive traceability dossiers. This documentation includes EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing reports, and certification in alignment with international classification registries. This makes our products ready for integration into processes audited by major regional operators like PTT Public Company Limited or EGAT (Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand).
From a procurement logistics standpoint, Thai engineering projects demand short delivery windows. This is particularly true during planned maintenance shutdowns or emergency turnaround operations. Beiersdorf's manufacturing base in Shanghai provides a strong supply chain advantage. Shanghai Port's shipping routes to Laem Chabang Port and Bangkok Port offer short transit times of 7 to 10 days.
Furthermore, bilateral trade agreements such as the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) provide substantial import duty exemptions for Chinese industrial components when accompanied by a Form E Certificate of Origin. This allows Thai procurement managers to source custom-engineered, fully certified cryogenic fasteners from our factory while keeping project budgets optimized.

Answering major engineering and procurement questions for Thailand's industrial sectors.
Although both grades share similar chemical composition limits (typically medium-carbon alloy steel) and tensile strengths, they differ in heat treatment and testing requirements. ASTM A320 L7 fasteners are specifically designed and tested for low-temperature service down to -101°C, requiring Charpy V-notch impact validation. ASTM A193 B7 fasteners, on the other hand, are intended for high-temperature and high-pressure service and do not undergo sub-zero impact testing. Using A193 B7 in place of A320 L7 in cryogenic piping presents brittle cleavage failure risks.
Atmospheric condensation occurs constantly when processing cryogenic fluids in tropical coastal areas like Rayong. When humid air makes contact with sub-zero pipes, it forms ice layers, creating a highly corrosive environment beneath the insulation. To prevent galvanic or general corrosion, Beiersdorf recommends selecting austenitic stainless steel grades such as ASTM A320 B8 (304) or B8M (316) with heavy fluoropolymer (PTFE) or specialty coatings that isolate the base metal from moisture.
Nickel alloys such as Inconel 718 demonstrate mechanical performance across a wide thermal range. Unlike standard alloys, Inconel remains ductile and resistant to cracking at temperatures down to -273°C while offering tensile strengths exceeding 1300 MPa. This combination is highly suited for high-stress applications like rotating machinery parts, gas turbines, and cryogenic valves.
Offshore structures, FPSO vessels, and marine terminals require fasteners certified by major classification societies like China Classification Society (CCS), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), or DNV. These certifications verify that the manufacturing factory adheres to standardized quality control protocols, heat treatment verification, and traceable raw material sourcing.
Beiersdorf is not only a supplier of special fasteners, but also can provide various technical consultations and guidance related to fasteners, including the selection of products and raw materials in the early stage, as well as the installation guidance and maintenance of fasteners in the subsequent stage.
